Spring Photo Shoot Prep for Parents

Let’s be honest—family photo sessions can feel a little like herding kittens. Throw in a field of flowers, a bit of wind, and maybe a snack emergency, and it can quickly go from “dreamy” to “meltdown.”
But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few tried-and-true tricks to help kids (and parents!) feel comfortable, relaxed, and even excited about photo day.
If you're joining me for an upcoming tulip farm session or if you’re simply looking for some general tips for your next family photoshoot, here’s how to set yourself up for success—and walk away with sweet, joy-filled images that capture this moment in time.
6 Tips For a Stress-Free Family Photo Shoot

1. 🧺 Keep It Light (and Low Pressure)
Kids feed off our energy. If you’re stressed or laser-focused on “getting the perfect shot,” they’ll feel it. Instead, treat the session like a special spring outing—something fun and different, not a formal event.
Tell them something like:
“We’re going to play in a field of flowers with someone who takes fun pictures—it’ll be quick and easy!”
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection.
2. 👕 Dress for Comfort and Cuteness
Yes, we all want those Pinterest-worthy photos, but comfort comes first—especially for kids.
Choose outfits that are easy to move in, don’t require constant adjusting, and feel good in warm spring air.
Tulip-friendly wardrobe tips:
Soft, breathable fabrics
Layers in case it’s breezy
Avoid stiff collars or itchy tags
Neutral or pastel colors (bonus: they pop beautifully against all those tulips!)
And don’t forget: a change of clothes just in case is always a good idea.
Need a little outfit inspo (without a Target run)?
Don’t worry—I’ve got you. I put together a styled guide for the whole crew to take the stress out of “what do we wear?” and help you feel confident in front of the camera.
From soft spring dresses for mom (including comfy long sleeve options if you’re not about the arms-out life) to baby dresses and timeless jeans for the littles—it’s all there.
But here’s the thing: you don’t HAVE to buy new outfits. This guide is perfect for helping you pull together pieces you already own—whether it’s that flowy top you love, or the little linen romper your kiddo lived in last summer. It’s all about creating an effortless, cohesive look that works beautifully on camera.

3. 🍪 Pack Snacks, But Make Them Photo-Friendly
Hungry kids = cranky kids. Bring along small, mess-free snacks like mini crackers, dry cereal, or gummies (skip the chocolate—it melts fast!). A little treat can work wonders for mid-session cooperation.
You can even say:
“After a few pictures, you’ll get a surprise snack!” Instant motivation.

4. 💐 Let Them Explore the Space
This one’s important. Some of the best moments happen when kids aren’t looking at the camera.
When they’re picking flowers. When they’re spinning in a patch of sunshine. When they’re chasing their sibling or twirling the hem of their dress.
We’ll take posed shots and lots of candid ones—because those in-between moments? That’s the real magic.
Let them lead. Let them be curious. That’s where we will find magic! .
5. 🧸 Bring Something Familiar (Just in Case)
Sometimes a favorite toy, small blanket, or even a stuffed animal can help little ones feel more at ease. We might not use it in every photo, but it can be a comforting bridge when they need it. Bonus if it's neutral or cute enough to sneak into a shot or two!
6. Let Them Be Little 💛
Here’s the part I want you to remember most:Some of the most beautiful moments happen when kids aren’t performing.
They happen when they’re wrapped up in a hug, barefoot in the grass, or quietly observing the world around them. These are the moments that matter. These are the moments we want to remember.
So let your child be themselves—messy, wild, shy, silly, curious. I’ll meet them exactly where they are. Y
You don’t need to coach or pose them. Just love on them. Be present. I’ll take care of the rest.
Because the goal isn’t perfect smiles. The goal is to remember them just as they are in this season.
Take a breath.
Smile at the chaos. I’ve got you.
