When I moved to Ithaca, New York, I quickly learned the importance of dressing appropriately for the weather, especially during winter.
As a teacher in an area that experiences extreme winters with heavy snowfall, I began recommending to families the importance of having proper winter gear, such as warm coats, gloves, hats, and boots. I discovered that having the right gear can make a significant difference in staying comfortable and safe during the harsh winter months and, of course, having fun!
In Scandinavia, there's a saying that goes, "There's no bad weather, just inappropriate clothing". This means anyone can enjoy the outdoors in any weather condition with the proper clothing. This is especially true for kids who love to play and explore, regardless of the weather.
If you want your kids to be able to play outdoors in cold or wet weather for more extended periods, it's crucial to get them adequately outfitted. By doing so, you'll be ensuring their safety, comfort, and enjoyment of the outdoors. You don't have to break the bank to properly outfit your kids, as plenty of affordable options are available.
We've got you covered if you're looking for ways to keep your kids warm during the colder months!
Our list includes all the essential items that your kids will need to stay cozy, such as warm and comfortable jackets, hats, gloves, and more.

Additionally, here is our comprehensive guide on layering up to maximize warmth and comfort. We understand that durability is also important, so we've ensured that the list includes high-quality and durable snow boots. This list is a must-have for parents who want to ensure their kids stay warm and comfortable during the cold winter days.
01 Base Layer
When dressing your child for cold weather, it is essential to ensure that they have a proper base layer. The base layer is designed for absorbing sweat and is probably the most critical layer. Even if they are out in cold temperatures and participating in lots of physical activities such as sledding or snowshoeing, they will still break a sweat. The base layer will keep them dry and comfortable. This layer should consist of a close-fitting undershirt and long underwear. Long sleeves are a must!
We love to use this base layer and find it super affordable.
02 Middle Layer
The layer between the inner and outer layers of clothing is called the middle layer, which serves the purpose of insulation. This layer is responsible for trapping the heat generated by your child's body, thereby keeping them warm and insulated from the cold weather during winter. Without a middle layer, your child's body heat escapes quickly, and they may feel cold. Various options are available regarding the middle layer, such as synthetic and natural materials like wool sweaters, fleece, flannel, and more. You may already have something suitable in your child's closet to use as a middle layer.
03 Outer Layer
The topmost layer of clothing is called the outer layer. Its primary purpose is to protect you from harsh weather conditions such as snow, rain, and wind. Sometimes, when we dress ourselves or our children, we tend to overlook the other two layers and go straight to the outer layer. This can lead to discomfort, cold, and even tears. Remember that it covers two other layers when shopping for an outer layer, so it's best to pick a size up.
There are plenty of options available for winter coats, but ideally, a waterproof jacket is the best choice for snow play. Look for a well-insulated coat to keep yourself or your children warm. Ski jackets are a great option since they are usually warm and durable. Don't forget to get snow pants or rain pants as well. Snow pants are a must-have when your kids go out to play in the snow. They protect their legs from the cold and snow.
04 Cold Weather Gear Extras
Winter Hats
Children, especially those that are younger, can lose up to one-third of their body heat through their heads. Ensure you put a warm winter hat on their head before they leave the house! This can also help protect their ears from frostbite as they play.
Gloves/Mittens
Keep those fingers from frostbite by getting the kids waterproof mittens or gloves before heading out. Like most winter gear, waterproof is always preferred to keep melting snow out! These waterproof, insulated gloves are perfect for creating snowballs.
Warm Socks
A cozy pair of thick socks is the perfect addition to their winter gear to keep their toes warm while playing outside! Merino wool socks are perfect for this.
Snow Boots
Warm, lined and waterproof boots are the perfect choice of footwear for kids to complete their winter outfits. These boots keep their feet warm and provide excellent traction, which comes in handy while walking up snowy hills or navigating through snow in the backyard.
Face masks
If your kids like to play ninjas, they will love these face masks! Face masks are a great way to protect your child’s face from wind, cold air, and snow.
Remember, dressing appropriately for winter weather is essential for enjoying outdoor activities and ensuring the safety and comfort of children. By providing them with the proper winter gear, parents can unlock the secret to conquering the challenges of the snowy season. Investing in quality clothing that provides warmth, insulation, and protection against the elements is essential.
By following these essentials, you can make the most of the winter season and create lasting memories with your children.
